NEWS & UPDATES

February 2012

The Lutheran H&D program recently started a bio-sand filter project aimed at training community members in the skill of constructing low-cost household level water purification systems.  The project is being piloted in select communities in and around the capital city of Lusaka.  Community Health Promoters have been trained and are currently busy installing the first round of filters constructed during their training period.

In addition, the program continues to sink deep-water wells (boreholes) throughout Zambia in conjunction with congregations of the Lutheran Church of Central Africa.  It is always a privilege and a blessing to witness a community receiving the gift of clean water.  As one elderly woman commented, "I can now bathe as many times as I want!"

Lastly, the adult literacy program continues to grow.  The groups, called circles, have been moving towards developing income-generating activities with a number of circles starting to realize profits from their efforts.  It is a joy to watch the circles work together towards a common goal and succeed.  It is our hope that through such efforts, the importance of education will grow and all children in these communities will not only be encouraged but also expected to be in formal education.
