Lutheran Health and Development Program

NEWS & UPDATES

November 2009

The H&D program hosted an adult literacy seminar for the LCCA pastors to help them understand their role in encouraging the literacy circles and their members that facilitate them.  The seminar was received with great enthusiasm and the men expressed their interest in more workshops to help them serve their congregations.  As leaders of congregations and communities that face daily physical struggles, they appreciate the opportunity to learn about development programs.  It is the hope of the H&D program that as the pastors gain further understanding about the needs of their communities, they are able to utilize the pontential of their members to meet those needs.  The adult literacy program is an example of this link where educated members are able to fill the need of illiteracy among community adults.  A common result of these literacy circles are community schools for vulnerable run and managed by community members.  As the parents become more literate, children's education becomes more of a priority.  Other common results are community cooperatives that initiate income-generating activities for vulnerable women and families.  We pray our program sees some of these results.

Jason Paltzer, community development specialist, is available for presentations and Bible studies for groups, congregations, schools and other events.  Mr. Paltzer lived in Zambia from 2003-2009 and was one of the developers of the Health & Development program.  He currently resides in Madison, WI.  He can be reached at jpaltzer@healthlcca.com or 608-338-5320
